Quick checks before you call

Troubleshooting tips for stubborn keys, remotes, and ignitions

A few simple fixes can solve common lock and remote problems. But if the key will not turn in the ignition, call us for repair instead of forcing it.

Key will not unlock a door

If a door key feels sticky or stiff, try a small amount of graphite or a lock-safe lubricant in the keyway. Work the key in gently and avoid over-applying oil-based products, which can attract debris.

Do not force it. If the key still binds, the lock cylinder may need cleaning, rekeying, or repair.

Keyless entry remote is not working

If your remote suddenly stops responding, replace the battery first. A weak or dead battery is one of the most common causes of intermittent lock/unlock problems.

After replacing the battery, re-test the remote from a few feet away and make sure the battery contacts are seated properly.

Key will not turn in the ignition

If the key inserts but will not turn, stop and call us. Different vehicle brands can have different ignition cylinder, key wear, transponder, and steering-lock issues.

Forcing the key is never the answer. It can snap the key, damage the cylinder, or make the repair more expensive.

Other quick checks

  • Try your spare key if you have one.
  • Check that the steering wheel is not locked against the ignition.
  • Inspect the key for bending, cracking, or heavy wear.
  • Make sure the lock or door is not frozen or obstructed.
